What is wood made of?

The trunk consists of bark, cambium, xylem (wood) and pith. From the xylem of the cross section of the trunk, the ring around the pith can be seen. Each ring is generally composed of two parts: the light colored part is called early wood (spring wood), which grows in the early season with large cells and sparse material; The dark part is called late wood (autumn wood), which grows in the late season with small cells and dense material. Some wood, in the middle of the trunk, dark color, called heartwood; In the edge, the color is lighter, called sapwood. Coniferous wood is mainly composed of tracheid, wood ray and axial parenchyma. It is arranged regularly and the material is uniform. Broad leaved wood is mainly composed of vessel, wood fiber, axial parenchyma and wood ray. Because of the directional arrangement of the cells that make up the wood, there is a difference between the longitudinal and transverse lines. The transverse grain can be distinguished as the radial direction consistent with the wood ray; The tangential direction perpendicular to the wood ray. Coniferous wood is generally tall, straight texture, easy processing, easy drying, cracking and deformation is small, suitable for structural timber. Some broad-leaved trees are hard in texture, beautiful in texture and color, and suitable for decoration.
